Mercury retrograde: what it is and what it means

Three or four times a year, Mercury appears from Earth to slow, stop, and move backward through the zodiac for about three weeks. It isn't really reversing — it's an optical effect of Earth and Mercury's relative orbital speeds, the same way a faster car seems to slide backward as you overtake it. But the appearance is what the tradition reads, and a planet that is stationing and retrograde is understood to be operating differently: turned inward, reviewing rather than initiating, prone to reversal and revision.

Mercury governs communication, contracts, commerce, travel, and the movement of information. So the practical guidance is consistent and unglamorous: during the retrograde, favour re- words — review, revise, reconsider, reconnect, repair — over launching, signing, and committing. It is an excellent window for finishing, editing, and returning to unfinished things, and a poor one for irreversible firsts.

The shadow period most guides ignore

The retrograde itself is only the middle of the story. Mercury casts a shadow on both ends: the pre-retrograde shadow begins when Mercury first touches the degree it will later retrograde back to, and the post-retrograde shadow runs from the station-direct until Mercury finally clears the degree where it first turned back. The full disruption window is therefore noticeably longer than the three "official" weeks — often closer to seven or eight. The post-shadow, when Mercury re-covers the ground it reviewed, is when delayed decisions tend to finally resolve. Almost no popular guide covers it properly, which is exactly why this tool shows it.

What it means for your chart

The generic guidance above is true for everyone, but the specific impact depends on which of your houses Mercury is retrograding through and whether it touches any of your natal planets. A retrograde in your 3rd house hits communication and local travel; in your 7th, partnerships and negotiations; in your 10th, career and public dealings. A retrograde that stations on your natal Sun or Mercury is a different order of event from one passing through an empty house. Sign placement alone — what most articles give you — is the least personal layer.
